..Israel has requested F-15Exs from the Pentagon, a move which suggests precision-air strikes might offer longer-term solutions to destroying Hamas while reducing damage to civilians….
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the strategic and military dynamics seem complex and multifaceted. The recent statements by the Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary, Sabrina Singh, shed light on the United States’ perspective and its role in the evolving situation.
Secretary Singh has stated that the goal of dismantling Hamas, a terrorist organization that has brutally killed over 1,000 people, is shared with Israel. However, the specifics of how this operation is conducted within Rafah is a matter of ongoing discussion with the Israeli government.
If the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) penetrate Rafah and seize control of the Gazan flank of the Philadelphi Corridor, it would result in a significant setback for Hamas. This would strip them of their final significant battalions, deprive them of their last substantial urban stronghold for concealing their leadership and hostages used as human shields.
However, a full military operation in Rafah would be terrifying, given some 1.5m Gazans are sheltering in the area. Therefore, the international community has urged Israel to refrain from attacking the overcrowded city of Rafah.
The question of whether Israel can dismantle Hamas in Rafah without a major invasion is crucial. An invasion carries significant risks, including high civilian casualties and the potential for a protracted conflict that could destabilize the region further.
On the other hand, precision strikes using advanced fighter planes like the F-15 and F-35 offer a way to target Hamas infrastructure and personnel with reduced collateral damage.
The F-15 and F-35 are among the most advanced fighter planes in the world, with capabilities that make them well-suited for complex operations in densely populated areas like Rafah. The F-15, known for its air superiority and strike capabilities, can carry a wide array of munitions, allowing it to engage multiple targets simultaneously. The F-35, with its stealth capabilities and advanced sensors, can penetrate enemy defenses and conduct precision strikes with minimal detection.
Israel has officially requested 25 F-15 EX fighters from the US. The Israeli air force is already hoping to double the order. The earliest deliveries of the F-15 EX are expected in 2028, but the Israeli government may ask the US to condense that timeline.
Additionally, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Singh reiterated the US support for Israel. In a question to her at a press event about the possibility of US providing F-15 and F-35 to Israel, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Singh said;
“Security assistance was discussed. That is something that we (the US) have committed to providing to Israel.”

Furthermore, the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a recent press news expressed his concern over the “far too high” number of civilian casualties in Gaza and the “far too low” volume of aid deliveries. However, he reiterated the stance that Israel possesses the right to self-defense and assured that the US would consistently stand by to assist.
The United States plays a crucial role in this conflict, both as a provider of military aid to Israel and as a diplomatic actor seeking to mitigate the humanitarian impact of military operations. The discussion of security assistance, including the potential approval of additional F-15 and F-35 fighter planes, highlights the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security.
Ultimately, the resolution of this conflict requires more than military might. Diplomatic efforts to address the underlying causes of the conflict, support for civilian protection, and a commitment to rebuilding and reconciliation are essential components of a comprehensive strategy. As the situation evolves, the international community must remain engaged and vigilant, advocating for solutions that uphold the principles of justice, security, and human dignity.
The challenge of dismantling Hamas in Rafah and Israel’s request for additional fighter planes are complex issues that require careful consideration and negotiation. As Secretary Singh has emphasized, these matters are under ongoing discussion and review.
