Major General Coffman is a middle class kid from a small town in Central Florida who had the amazing opportunity to serve his country as a Marine Officer for 34 years and, along the way, deepen his understanding of the eternal values of Faith, Family, Country, and Community.
Born and raised in Eustis, Florida, he graduated cum laude from Duke University and was commissioned a Marine Second Lieutenant through the Navy ROTC Program in May 1985. General Coffman spent the first half of his career in Marine Aviation flying helicopters in training and tactical operations all over the world. For the second half, he led Navy-Marine and Joint teams at home and forward deployed as a Commander and staff officer up to the most senior levels of National Defense.
During his service as a Marine, General Coffman had lots of opportunities to build, train, and lead diverse teams in challenging situations in peacetime, crisis, and conflict. He has learned a lot about leadership, and life. Particularly since 5 th July 2004, when he was very seriously injured (ironically) by getting shot while flying a Casualty Evacuation mission in Central Iraq as a helicopter squadron commander. From his own evacuation back home for repairs, and in the years since, he has demonstrated a passion for LEADING IN TOUGH TIMES— HOW TO “THRIVE IN CHAOS”— and AFTER…
General Coffman now speaks and writes about his experiences in order to help individuals and organizations seeking to THRIVE in our current age by renewing their commitment to FAITH, FAMILY, COUNTRY, and COMMUNITY.
