Since 2010, Mr. Peter Huessy, Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, has co-hosted two major nuclear symposiums annually, one of which takes place in cooperation with a US nuclear related command. On July 20th, 2023, Louisiana State University in Shreveport and the Hudson Institute will once again co-host a Triad Symposium highlighting the strengths of AFGSC (Air Force Global Strike Command) and the US Navy as vital deterrent forces.
The conference will explore the new nuclear challenges from Russia and China, including an overall intelligence brief by USAF Global Strike Command, followed by expert analysis from Rick Fisher and Dr. Richard Weitz (Hudson Inst.) of the extent of the Russian and Chinese nuclear modernization and expansion. Mark Schneider and Dr. Stephen Blank (FPRI) will discuss the implications for US security policy concerning Russia, as well as considering the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The conference will then hear from Dr. Christopher Yeaw (NSRI) on the need for a new US hedge strategy including the pathways for the expansion of the US nuclear deterrent as well as an analysis from Ambassador Chris Ford (Stanford) on the impact on US security policy especially proliferation and arms control.
Frank Miller, formerly of the Scowcroft Group will give us a glimpse of the Nuclear Environment from 40,000 feet. Howard Kosht (AFGSC A5) and Maj Gen Mark Pye (tentative) will discuss AFGSC Modernization and Sustainment.
Conference speakers from the US Navy—Admirals Wolfe and Pappano—will once again provide their expert assessments of the current D-5/LEP and Columbia class submarine programs, while USAF Global Strike Command will discuss the current Sentinel ICBM program especially a number of logistical issues as we transition from MMIII.
Maj Gen Kenneth Eaves (tentative) will deliver closing keynote remarks, providing a Strategic Air Forces update. Mr. Huessy will provide an overview of the cost of the nuclear modernization and sustainment programs, highlighting the affordability of the recapitalization of the nuclear deterrent.
Like last year, an industry panel will share with the Symposium the unique technology they bring to the nuclear enterprise, but with an added element of what challenges they face in completing the nuclear modernization in a timely manner.
The symposium will be held at Louisiana State University Shreveport, University Center, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and reception. We have blocked a group of rooms at local hotels for attendees.
You can participate via zoom using the following link for those who cannot attend in person.
We look forward to seeing you either in person or virtually on July 20; if you have any questions, please reach out to Ashley Dean, Assistant Director of Strategy Alternatives Consortium, at .
