In response to multiple reports that Chinese fighter Jets buzzed by islands in the South China Sea, the Pentagon gave Scout Warrior the following statement:
From Cmdr. Bill Urban, Pentagon Spokesman:
“The U.S. is aware that China has deployed fighter aircraft to Woody Island in the past. The specifics of a recent deployment of fighter aircraft to Woody Island would be less an issue than the signal it sends of how far out of step China’s actions are with the aspirations of the region.
As expressed in the Sunnylands Declaration on February 16, President Obama and leaders of ASEAN countries confirmed that we share a commitment to maintain peace, security and safety, including freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded lawful commerce, as well as non-militarization and self-restraint in the conduct of activities. The maintenance of these principles have created conducive conditions for the region’s peace and prosperity. We want to see all claimants, including China, taking actions that respect these principles,” Urban said in a written statement.
