In 2024, as the conflict with Russia drags on, Ukraine has updated its requests for military aid from Western allies, now asking for more advanced and sophisticated weapons systems. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has put together a detailed list of these needs, which includes both equipment they already have and new requests.
According to Reuters, key items on Ukraine’s latest list include:
- Advanced Air Defense Systems: This includes the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, essential for defending against high-altitude threats like ballistic missiles. It features cutting-edge radar and interceptors. Initiated by Lockheed Martin, with Raytheon and Boeing’s input, its development dates back to 1995 and it is operational in various global locations. It works seamlessly with other defense systems.
- F-18 “Hornet” Fighter Jets: Ukraine wants these advanced fighter jets to improve its air combat capabilities. Since the 1980s, they’ve been a cornerstone of the US Navy, participating in numerous conflicts.
- Drones: The request includes various types of drones, especially those made by General Atomics, to boost Ukraine’s surveillance and precision strike capabilities. One example is the MQ-1C Gray Eagle. These drones are distinguished by their endurance and altitude, equipped with sophisticated cameras and weapons. They’re primarily used for surveillance and targeted strikes.
- Attack and Utility Helicopters: The AH-64 Apache serves as a formidable attack helicopter, whereas the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, from Lockheed Martin, is versatile, handling everything from troop transport to medical evacuations.
- Transport Jets: Ukraine aims to get C-17 Globemaster and C-130 Super Hercules transport jets, which would greatly improve its logistical abilities. The C-17 specializes in strategic airlifts, moving troops and cargo worldwide. The C-130 Hercules, a multipurpose four-engine aircraft, is adept in various military transport roles.
- Artillery and Tanks: The list still includes M1 Abrams tanks and 155-millimeter artillery, showing a continued need for heavy ground weaponry. The M1 Abrams, a third-generation tank, is renowned for its robust armor and firepower. The 155mm artillery, crucial in NATO’s lineup, exemplifies long-range firepower and strategic prowess.
The United States and its allies have already given significant military help to Ukraine, including advanced systems like HIMARS, NASAMS, and Germany’s IRIS-T missile systems. However, more advanced weapons like the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and sophisticated drones like the Gray Eagle haven’t been supplied, due to concerns about escalation and the risk of advanced technology falling into the wrong hands.
The current situation in the conflict shows that Ukraine’s success relies heavily on continued and increased support from NATO and its member countries. While Ukraine has been strong and skilled in defending its territory, winning decisively against a strong opponent like Russia is tough without substantial outside help. This support, both in equipment and training, is crucial for Ukraine to keep up its defense and slowly change the war in its favor.
